Use ATM Machines Inside of Banks to Avoid Getting Ripped Off by Scammers

ATMs are easy targets for thieves, as skimmers and other devices make it easy to grab your debit card information and use it to take your money. One simple way to reduce the risk of falling victim to these scams is to only use ATM machines that are inside the bank. Here's why.

Anonymous policeman "Officer X" (who I've met and can confirm is an actual police officer) has taken note of the frequent causes of scams and theft at automated teller machines. On his blog, he explains why bank ATMs are generally the safest choice when you need to make a transaction:

Banks have multiple security cameras near the ATM area and have their machines frequently maintained. Freestanding ATM's are risky to use because thieves could install cameras, skimmers, programs, etc that will steal your information. Freestanding ATM machines in gas stations are targeted by many thieves. And don't even think about making cash deposits in an ATM machine that isn't located in a bank. Thieves sometimes buy dummy ATM's and place them in a public area. These ATM's don't actually work and are strictly used to steal people's account information and cash.
